Transosteal Implants
Transosteal implants are not performed as often as other types of dental implants. These implants are attached up through the bottom of the jawbone and go completely through the bone so that a post comes up through the gums to attach to the abutments and artificial teeth. After the abutments and teeth are attached, the gums are stitched and allowed to heal.
An incision may be made under the chin to install a metal plate and attachment screws to the jawbone. This type of dental implant is used primarily for replacement of the lower teeth and is usually for those who only need a few of the lower teeth replaced.
