Maintaining White Teeth Naturally After A Procedure

Dentist Blog

Everyone wants to look their best when smiling, and getting and keeping your teeth as white as possible is a big part of that. Here are a few ways to keep your teeth white after your professional whitening appointment.

Tongue Brushing

This does more than get gunk off your tongue. Some research suggests that it can also contribute to keeping your teeth from staining. That bacteria on your tongue can build up and cause all sorts of issues for discoloring your teeth in the long run. What you want to do is use a toothbrush with soft bristles and then go all the way back and forth across your tongue's surface.

Don't forget to water down your brush frequently in between doing this, so you don't dump any of that discoloring bacteria back on your tongue. You don't want to waste effort.

Apple Cider Vinegar

One trick you can use to help maintain your white teeth is rinsing your mouth out with apple cider vinegar. This is definitely isn't going to be a replacement for teeth whitening at a professional dentist's office, but it can help you a bit with maintenance. You'll need one part apple cider vinegar to two parts water. Swishing it around for a minute or so should do the trick.

Wash Out After Citrus

If you like to eat a lot of citrus fruits, make sure you swish out your mouth with water afterwards. The acid from citrus can settle on your teeth and erode the enamel, which will increase staining. If you wash your mouth out after consuming these fruits, you'll help eliminate the effect and preserve your white teeth for longer.

Fiber and Leaves Exfoliate

If you eat foods that have a lot of fiber in them, such as carrots and apples, you will actually help make your teeth white. Leafy greens that are fibrous especially help keep your teeth white by exfoliating them, wiping them clean before any stains can properly bond with them.

Use Straws

After you get a whitening treatment, you can prevent the recurrence of stains by drinking anything that might stain your teeth through a straw. Wine and cranberry juice, for example, can stain teeth. Drinking them through a straw decreases surface area contact with your teeth as the liquid goes down your throat.

These approaches will help you keep your teeth white in between professional whitening treatments. For more information, talk to a dentist like those at  Advanced Family Dental Care LLC.
